This is a group care facility that was specifically developed for a 16 year old male youth with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. This particular youth has been in out-of-home care since he was 12 years old. The components of this program include:
- Home schooling
- Recreational outings to enhance his range of social experiences
- Life skills to prepare him for the transition to adult care
- Social skills coaching to maximize his ability to function with others in the community
There is a Program Coordinator, Clinical Coordinator, House Parent, Family Support Worker, Facility Aid and numerous Youth Workers who work with this youth in the home.
The goal of this program is to offer this youth a long term stable home environment that is customized to meet his unique needs. Individuals with Autistic Spectrum Disorder often experience difficulties with social interaction, communication and imagination. This group home was designed with this youth’s specific needs in mind. The environment has been altered and specialized training of staff was implemented prior to the child moving to the home. Safety, windows, lighting, noise, smells, colours and physical layout were all factors considered in the design of this program.
An individualized treatment plan has been developed to provide guidance to the staff in assisting this youth in meeting his goals. Included in the treatment plan is a behavioral program to promote a reduction in negative behaviours. It is anticipated this program will help to transition the youth into adult services.
